PAPER | RPIC142: Helping Students SOAR above the Challenges of Industry 4.0 through a Tiered STEM ALP

Session Information

The accelerated disruptions ushered by Industry 4.0 makes it challenging for educators to prepare students for future jobs that do not exist today. Existing school curriculum is limited in exposing students to see interconnectedness between subject disciplines and relevance to real life applications. STEM education has been identified as a solution to develop problem solving skills and innovative thinking in students to be ready for Industry 4.0. SOAR is my school's STEM Applied Learning Programme. It aims to develop students in STEM knowledge and skills and ensure that they are future-ready. SOAR uses a tiered approach in order to have the breadth to benefit all students and the depth to provide students with greater interest and aptitude opportunities to pursue further. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations have been used to evaluate SOAR's impact on students. Questionnaire results show that the overall mean score is higher especially in Secondary 2 Express and the effect size of 0.36 shows that the ALP lessons had a medium impact on students' development in STEM and future-readiness. Interview responses show that SOAR supports students' understanding and application of subject knowledge and skills, nurtures students' problem solving and critical thinking skills and cultivates a better appreciation of STEM-related career options.
